Whipple Wisdom from memories of 1927

Save buying a Coal Scuttle
Roof cement and sand mixed together with enough water to give it the consistency of soft putty can be used to mend the coal-hod. Clean the deteriorated surface and plaster it well with the mixture using a putty knife
Sprinkle sand over the patch and the next day "voila' ready to use...
Coal Scuttle's originated in the 1800's
A coal scuttle, sometimes spelled coalscuttle and also called a hod, is a bucket-like container for holding a small, intermediate supply of COAL convenient to an indoor coal-fired stove or heater.
The word scuttle comes from the Latin word Scutlla, meaning a shallow pan.
